  • ITW's Foamseal® E-Z Fill®
Fox News’ Window Foam Investigation Does Not Include ITW’s Foamseal® E-Z Fill® (Oxford, MI—July 24, 2009) A lengthy news report on Fox News Channel 29 in Philadelphia, PA on Monday, July 22 investigated replacement windows from a local distributor/installer. The news report showed that the foam-filled windows the customers had purchased had little or no foam in them. Foam filling has received attention recently because of the drive for lower U-Value numbers, competitive pressure for product differentiation and more recently, the new Energy Star and federal government stimulus “30 -30” requirements. As a major supplier of insulation foams to the fenestration market, we want to be sure that you have the facts about our product: 1) A different product—The foam that was covered in the Fox News story was not ITW’s Foamseal® E-Z Fill® Foam. Instead, it appeared to be a foam formulated for small spray on insulation applications. This type of foam is not formulated to flow in a cavity. 2) A different application method—The application method for the foam shown on Fox News was not what we recommend for a complete foam fill. Instead, it was injected into holes cut into welded sash and frame sections. While ITW Futura does not control how our products are used by fabricators, we make every effort to recommend the appropriate foam filling methods for our foams and monitor their applications in customers’ plants. Our products perform well when used properly with the appropriate equipment. ITW Futura wants you to be completely satisfied with our products. If you have any questions about Foamseal® E-Z Fill® Foam, application methods or appropriate use, please contact Art Goldman, sales manager, engineered foams, ITW Futura Coatings at 248-969-4218 or 248-770-3739. About ITW Foamseal E-Z Fill Foams Our products are specifically formulated to fill cavities in whole-length vinyl profiles, using foam fill dispensing equipment that has been engineered for this application. Complete foam filling is generally assured by dispensing a metered shot of foam and observing foam expulsion at both ends of the extrusion. Foam voids are infrequent and generally detected before fabrication when the filled extrusion length is cut into smaller mitered sections used to fabricate windows. A foam void can be corrected with a small “touch up shot” of additional foam with either a portable foam kit or through injection with the foam dispensing equipment. In addition, ITW does not recommend filling “weep” or wet cavities or cavities that are too small to consistently fill.

  • Florida Certification for Foamseal®
ITW Futura Gains Florida Certification for Foamseal® Hurricane Adhesive (Oxford, Mi—March 3, 2009) Foamseal® Hurricane Adhesive, a product of ITW Futura Coatings, has been approved by the State of Florida for use in a High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ). This approval is based upon wind load testing at a Miami Dade Certified Test Laboratory, which demonstrated that Foamseal® has the highest design pressure uplift rating of any foam adhesive on the market. Foamseal® protects against roof damage and water intrusion through a patented polyurethane adhesive applied to the joints and seams of the internal roof structure. This provides greater uplift wind resistance than roof construction using only nails and also provides a secondary barrier against water intrusion damage if roof shingles or tiles are lost. A 1998 study after Hurricanes Andrew, Hugo and Opal by Clemson University’s Department of Civil Engineering reported that a primary source of damage resulted from failure of the roof sheathing and that exposing the structure’s interior to severe wind and rain was a major cause of the economic loss due to hurricanes. “We are pleased to have this additional validation for Foamseal® as we expand its distribution to other states in the Southeast and Gulf Coast. Several years ago the product was included in My Safe Florida Home, a government program that highlights products proven to reduce hurricane damage on residential structures. In addition, Foamseal® is used in the University of Florida’s four Windstorm Damage Mitigation Training and Demonstration Centers, known as Hurricane Homes, which feature storm-resistant construction methods and protective products,” said Art Goldman, ITW sales manager for engineered adhesive foam products. In addition, the Citizen’s Property Insurance Corporation, Florida’s state-organized insurance entity that serves high-risk areas, has designated Foamseal® as a mitigating factor. As a result, the use of the product reduces wind insurance premiums by up to 35 percent. When combined with other mitigation techniques and products, wind insurance discounts can exceed 70%. Foamseal®, which was developed 11 years ago, has been used successfully in Florida since 1998. Certified technicians apply the product, most frequently in existing homes. The cost for application is approximately $1.50 – 1.70 per square foot of roof area or $3,000 to $3,400 for a 2,000 square foot house. For more information contact: Shari S. Cohen, 248.539.3036
